Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
