The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
