New research indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
